  • At first Netflix said, come write for us. We’ll save your cancelled shows and write about whatever niche story you want. Our algorithm says people will watch it!

Then a few years later they said, regardless of our promises or contract obligations we are cancelling shows after two seasons without telling anyone. Turns out no matter how loved a show is, we get less subscriptions after the second season.

How many subscriptions did we bring you? Netflix won’t say.

So writers started writing two season shows. Just give us two seasons, Netflix. Like you promised.

Then Netflix said, oops sorry! Turns out your show didn’t premiere at #1 and the views in the first day weren’t what we wanted so we’re cancelling your second season.

What were the numbers? How many people watched our show? Netflix doesn’t say.

Then, they did something extra special. They started taking shows and splitting their first season into two halves. Inside Job was not two seasons. It was one season split in half.

Oops! Sorry! The second half of your first season didn’t do as well as the first half, so now your show is cancelled!

Why? How many people? How much money? These companies are making cash hand over fist and they refuse to tell people the truth: people loved your show. Loved it. But some corpo exec wanted an infinite money making machine. Do you know how long shows are in production for before you watch them? Years. Like, 5+, even 10+ years. And Netflix gives it less than a week before they decide whether you’re getting cancelled.

  • You didn't even mention the spiciest part. Netflix does not want us to watch their shows. Watch time costs them money. Netflix only wants to hook us long enough to subscribe. The more Season 1's they make, the more hooks they give us. Once they have our money, the last thing they want is to keep writers and actors on the payroll. Those shows that go for less than three seasons may as well be advertisements.

  • fun fact! did you know that you can gain extra ‘forbidden time’ by staying up late in the night? but Watch Out

  • Shit this is great! You can get so much done if you don't sleep!

  • THE CONSEQUENCES

  • one thing you won't know until you experience it for yourself when you create art out of love is how it feels when people receive it with love. when you post a doodle and someone keeps it as their lockscreen, or when you write a story and someone tells you they were thinking about it all day, or when you post a poem and someone shares it with a touching caption. doesn't matter if it was objectively good or not. matters that someone spent time with it, that someone really, really liked it, and you made it. this kind of interaction, i think, it can really sustain you for weeks. it can sustain you through a lot of terrible things. its confirmation that you exist, and that (however briefly) your existence was appreciated by someone else through your art.

  • the code has been updated to remove some old extraneous filters that only applied on the old layout, and also now keeps the search bar in the top right.

hey, sorry to bother, that code you posted in pastebin is INCREDIBLY useful, but i'd like to get the search bar to stay and i can't quite figure out which line is the one removing the search bar, can i ask which line to delete for that if it isn't much trouble?

  • oh yep, forgot I blocked that too. I updated the code in the original post to keep the search bar and get rid of some bloat, but the old code is still on the pastebin profile under “no search bar” if people still want to use that.
